Joseph Urban’s placement of these suspended pendant lamps enforces the visual framing around the bed. Hanging the lights from above also had the practical effect of freeing up space on the bedside tables. The trumpet-shaped, multipaneled shades are distilled in form but without loss of interest. Similar lamps were used in other projects by Urban, including a bedroom designed for Katharine Brush (1933) and the Atlantic Beach Club (1930-31).
