The Drake Tower was erected on the last parcel of vacant land facing north on Lake Shore Drive, Chicago’s “most exclusive boulevard.” Designed by the architect Benjamin H. Marshall, the 30-story luxury tower was the tallest residential building constructed in the city before World War II. The apartments featured sweeping views of Lake Michigan and Lincoln Park and, according to a brochure, included “all modern conveniences…so that residents may enjoy a most fully equipped city home.” The Tower’s lobby connected to that of the neighboring Drake Hotel, and its tenants had access to all of the hotel’s services. The upper floors of the Drake Tower have been modified since the Wormsers lived in the building, although the 27th-floor terrace of their former apartment remains.
